Can Idaho eliminate property taxes entirely—without raising income or state sales taxes?

It could. Here's how...

My primary goal is to help make growth pay for itself and keep your tax burden the lowest it can possibly be throughout Idaho. But it costs money to send communications. Your contribution will help further this cause.

You work hard to purchase your home. You make your mortgage payments, maintain your property, and contribute to your community.

Yet your property tax obligation never ends.

I sit down with State Senator Scott Herndon to examine his proposed 10-year plan, the financial assumptions behind it, and what it could mean for Idaho homeowners. My analysis is that the “pieces” are already in place to make it happen and I support the idea immensely (if you want to jump right into the interview, scroll down to the page bottom).

What If You Never Had to Pay Property Taxes Again…Ever?

Imagine paying off your mortgage, owning your home free and clear, and never worrying about another property tax bill.

For millions of Americans, homeownership represents financial security, independence, and the American Dream. Yet even after you've made your final mortgage payment, the government continues to collect property taxes every year.

And if you can't pay those taxes, you could eventually lose your home.

So here's a question worth asking: Can we create a system where you truly own your home without a permanent property tax obligation?

Both myself and State Senator Scott Herndon believe we can. And he has developed a proposal to eliminate property taxes over the next 10 years. But can the numbers actually work?

That's exactly what we explore in this in-depth interview.

Five Big Questions About Eliminating Idaho Property Taxes

1. Can Idaho Really Eliminate 100% of Property Taxes?

2. Where Will the Money Come From?

3. Has Idaho Already Started Eliminating Property Taxes?

4. What Happens to Police, Firefighters, Schools, and Roads?

5. What Would It Take to Make this a Reality?

There are also difficult questions about the relationship between state and local government that we discuss. If the state replaces local property tax revenues, how do we ensure communities retain control over their own priorities?

And can the Legislature maintain the necessary spending discipline for an entire decade? It can with pressure from you, the citizens to make it happen.

These are questions we discuss in the video.

I have been a taxpaying homeowner for over 60 years. Never late always on time. Now someone comes up with the novel idea to eliminate Property Tax! I think all taxes collected are illegal and should be refunded. As you know as long as property taxes can be a lien on your title, you do not really own your property even if you own it outright!

I agree that you never really own your home if you have to pay property taxes annually or risk losing it. In the discussion you will hear about the history of property taxes in Idaho, how income taxes in the 1930s were supposed to replace it, then sales taxes in the 1960s. None worked. Will this? Not sure, but if we don't try we will never know. Thank you for your comments @phorestgrn@reagan.com.
